Alfred Hitchcock
Rich and Strange is said to be Hitchcock’s most autobiographical film, possibly partly inspired by his own honeymoon with wife Alma. Also adapted by Hitch, Alma and Val Valentine from the novel by Dale Collins, Rich and Strange includes several tecniques that later came to define “the Hitchcock Touch” including shot compositions and the use of full size sets, in this case the ship in a water tank.
Married couple Fred and Emily Hill (Henry Kendall and Joan Barry) go on a world cruise to escape their humdrum lives. Their relationship begins to fall apart when they both become attracted to other people.
Hitch remained fond of Rich and Strange, telling Truffaut that it should have done better at the box office.
Written by Alma Reville, Val Valentine, Alfred Hitchcock, from the book by Dale Collins
Please note Rich and Strange is only available as part of the Hitchcock The Beginning blu-ray box-set
