For me it’s ‘The Family Way’, such a profound exploration of love and friendship, of sex and adolescence. The Boultings drew pitch perfect performances from John and Hayley Mills and Hywel Bennett – but also from Marjorie Rhodes, who held the whole thing together. Her reaction to John Mills’s last line has stayed with me ever since I first saw it, some forty years ago. Bill Naughton has always been one of my favourite writers and I always felt I learned so much from him about character and story. The greatest compliment I can pay this film is I could sit down and watch it again right now.
