Sidney Furie

Synopsis

Beloved 1961 feel-good British musical comedy The Young Ones follows a group of young performers who band together to save their local youth club from demolition, culminating in a vibrant celebration of youth, music, and community and perfectly capturing the spirit of early 1960s Britain at the height of its pop revolution. Starring pop music legend Cliff Richard (Summer Holiday, Wonderful Life) and his band The Shadows (Hank Marvin, Bruce Welch, Jet Harris, Tony Meehan) The Young Ones is directed by Sidney J. Furie (The Ipcress File, The Naked Runner, Lady Sings the Blues) with glorious black & white cinematography from Douglas Slocombe (The Lion in Winter, The Servant).

Featuring a film star-making performance from Cliff Richard and a soundtrack of unforgettable musical numbers — including the No. 1 title song hit “The Young Ones” — which became one of Richard’s biggest hits, topping the UK charts for six weeks and emerging as a defining anthem of his early career.  The 1961 box-office hit also stars veteran actor Robert Morley (The African Queen, Oscar Wilde), Carole Gray (The Cool Mikado), Richard O’Sullivan (Man About the House, Robin’s Nest), and Melvyn Hayes (Summer Holiday, Carry On series).

Icon Cliff Richard stars as Nicky Black, the leader of a London youth club who takes on the might of big business in a battle to save their dilapidated club premises from demolition. Unknown to Nicky’s friends, the head of the property company that’s pitted against them is Nicky’s own father, who has no sympathy with his son’s plight. To raise funds, members of the club stage a musical show, with Nicky as the star, in hopes they can save their club before it’s too late. A warm-hearted musical for all the family.
