There are so many brilliant films that are part of the Collection it’s hard to know where to start two films that have stood out for me over the years are the Cross of Iron & Went the Day Well.
Both films made an impact on me when the first time I saw them.
Cross of Iron because it was the first time I’d seen a war film from a Germans soldiers perspective James Coburn absolutely nails the role of a stoney faced German Cpl leading his broken men into the Russian front.
Went the Day well is most probably the most serious out of the whole “Ealing” films. Made in the height of ww2 in 1942 the film depicts a small English village that is taken by a group of German paratroopers.
The film acted as war propaganda warning of almost what to expect if the Germans were to invade. For the time it’s an incredibly serious and violent film that has stuck with me my whole life.
Other notable mentions to me of the collection include the cult classic The Wicker Man, the incredibly true to life story of the birth of British rock & roll, Stardust and the chilling Psychological Horror Don’t look Now.
